  • What is Steampunk?

There exist numerous interpretations of Steampunk—be it a fantasy style, a genre unto itself, or perhaps even a tangible reality. Regardless of how one defines it or feels about it, Steampunk undeniably holds its ground in our cultural landscape

For those fully immersed in the lifestyle of Steampunk fashion, a central question often emerges: What truly constitutes “authentic” Steampunk? While this remains a topic of considerable debate, there exists a valid perspective one might take on the matter. Should one view Steampunk as a realm of Sci-Fi fantasy, then the possibilities seem boundless. However, if one adheres to the historical context and the origins of the term, then the focus inevitably shifts to the era of steam engines and the Victorian period, considering the advent of electricity.

Indeed, the realm of Steampunk is a labyrinth of complexities. It encompasses an ever-evolving term used to describe objects crafted from an assortment of materials, melded together to create fantastical creations. For me, the demarcation is clear: I find great joy in the enchanting, mystical pieces of Steampunk artistry I’ve encountered.

In my view, true Steampunk necessitates the use of genuine vintage pieces. There is an inherent magic in an antique key, laden with the weight of its own history and the stories it holds within. Conversely, a mass-produced brass key designed to mimic antiquity lacks this depth of narrative. It is a sentiment echoed in the world of Steampunk jewelry, where the recurring motifs of octopuses, pocket watches, and the like may be exquisitely crafted, yet leave one pondering: Does this truly embody Steampunk?

This is where the essence of True Steampunk enters the discourse. Admittedly, I am not an expert in every facet of this remarkable art form. I was surprised to discover that some of my creations were categorized as Steampunk. My intention was simple—to breathe new life into pieces crafted from genuine vintage materials. These were treasures of yesteryear, each bearing the marks of time through faded patinas or weighty textures.

Many of us are drawn to relics of the past, feeling a kinship with eras long gone. Whether it is nostalgia or an appreciation for craftsmanship, there is an undeniable allure to vintage treasures. In my eyes, anything Victorian holds more charm than the gloss of modernity. I remain steadfast in my commitment to True Steampunk, employing vintage castaways—these misfit treasures—to create my art.

The debate rages on, and if my views on what constitutes authenticity have raised eyebrows, so be it. I stand firmly behind my work, for you will not find another piece quite like any of mine. Even I cannot replicate them, for each is a singular creation—a testament to the scarcity and uniqueness of vintage materials.
